以下、担当講師からのメッセージ(英文)です。

Greetings,

My name is Seth Simmons. I teach Hiroo Entrance Exam Preparation Strategies at ENA Kayabacho. This is a class specially tailored to prepare students for the material which they will encounter on the English portion of the Hiroo Middle School Entrance Exam. The actual exam is divided into three sections: prose reading, poetry reading, and a personal essay. To prepare for each of these, the primary areas of study in this class are reading, writing, and poetry, as well as a grammar.

One of the primary skills required for passing the English section of any exam is the ability to read and understand prose writing. In this class, students will read and answer questions on passages covering a number of topics, factual and fictional. The actual exam tends to feature writing of above-average, but not extreme, difficulty. Our readings will therefore begin at an average sixth-grade level and gradually build in complexity and amount of unusual vocabulary until they match what can be expected on the test. This will allow students of a variety of skill levels to achieve the proper competence without feeling overly stressed.

The writing section counts for fully half the credit in the English portion of Hiroo’s entrance exam, so writing is an extremely important focus of this class. Students will work in class on building and sharpening their skills at writing essays, and they will write at least one personal essay for homework each week. Although a variety of techniques will be taught during this course, the subjects of the essay questions on the actual test are usually concerned with explaining the student’s own experiences and feelings, so we will put extra emphasis on this kind of writing. The ultimate goal is for the student to be able to produce a clear, well-written one-page personal essay within less than 30 minutes.

Hiroo is unique among middle schools in having a poetry section on its entrance exam, for which reason we devote a portion of each class period to learning poetic terms and techniques, reading poetry, and analyzing how those techniques are applied in the poems. Although the main purpose of this is to prepare the students for these exam questions, it also allows them to strengthen their broader skills of comprehension and analysis, as well as exposing them to a wide range of classic English-language poetry.

Although grammar is not a specific focus of the questions on the Hiroo exam, it is still vital to understand the mechanics of the English language in order for the students to be able to produce high-quality writing, as well as to improve their reading comprehension. Therefore, this class includes a period of learning grammatical rules every week, beginning with strengthening basic concepts and building to more complex principles as time goes on.

Thank you for reading this. If your son or daughter is planning to apply to Hiroo Middle School, I hope you will consider sending them to this class. If you have any questions about this class or the material we cover, please do not hesitate to call or email ENA Kayabacho.

Sincerely,

Seth Simmons
