Greetings,

My name is Seth Simmons. I teach 7th Grade English at ENA Kayabacho. The class is divided into four sections: vocabulary, reading, grammar, and writing. As students in this class will have already finished middle school entrance exams, the goal here is to maintain the skills and knowledge which they gained preparing for those tests, while laying a foundation to build toward high school-level English and beyond.

For vocabulary, the primary text is Wordly Wise 7, which allows the students to learn a new set of 15 words every 3-4 weeks. They do several exercises to practice and reinforce each word’s meaning and appropriate usage. We also frequently discuss word roots, prefixes, and suffixes, showing how smaller pieces come together to form longer words.

Our reading usually consists of one or two short passages each week, which the students read aloud in class each week and which we then discuss together to ensure that everyone understands its meaning and content. The students typically answer a few comprehension and analysis questions for homework.

Grammar instruction is based on a systematic approach, starting with the rules that govern simple sentences and showing how they build to more complex formations, so that the students ultimately have an intuitive understanding of the simple logical principles that govern even the most complicated sentences.

The writing portion of the class is focused primarily on making certain that the students get as much practical experience as possible. The students must write at least one essay per week as homework, and we work together in class on planning and brainstorming model compositions. The students learn about what is involved in writing numerous types of essays, including comparison, classification, and process explanation. I take time to thoroughly review every piece of writing each student turns in and provide plenty of feedback on what they have done well or could improve on.

I also believe that, while formal, in-class learning is very important, one of the most helpful tools for building vocabulary and comprehension is to read on one’s own time. For this reason, I ask the students to read English books outside of class and submit reports summarizing what they have learned. I provide a list of suggested books from the shelf at ENA, but they are free to choose anything as long as they tell me so that I can be sure it is of an appropriate level.

I am available to my students any time I am not in class, whether they have questions on homework, understanding a new word, or general English-related advice. Please do not hesitate to email or call the office if you have any questions or concerns for me about this class. I would also be glad to speak to any parents who wish to discuss the class or review the curriculum.

Thank you for reading this. I hope I have provided a clear understanding of this class’s content and purpose, and I hope that you will consider joining us.

Sincerely,

Seth Simmons
