「帰国子女」と「英語ESSAY」のあいだ

中学入試において一部の学校ではFiction Writing Taskが出題されます。

一般で言われるところのCreative Writingの能力が求められます。

例えば、頌栄女学院では次のような課題が出されました。

Write an original story titled “The Cat That Was Afraid of Mice”(一部抜粋)

enaにおきましても、“Clashing Waves and A Tall Cliff”、“A Forest Full of Butterflies”のようなタイトルでエッセイを書いてもらい、添削指導をしています。

Write a story based on the following prompt:

Computer Chaos

You’re playing a computer game when, suddenly, all the characters in the game come to life and leap out of the screen. Oh dear, how do I stop this?

Student A’s Essay

“Boom!” I finally beat the game. The sound of exploding the enemy was still ringing in my ears. On the screen, it said “To have more fun, press button A three times.” I obeyed without question. All of a sudden, the monster I just defeated came out of the screen. Following the lead were all the monsters that I had defeated in the game. I uttered a silent scream. The screen was blank, probably because all of the game leaked out of it, into our world! I would have loved to tell you that I stayed calm and defeated the monsters, and shut off the TV. I did the complete opposite. I panicked. I closed my eyes and counted to ten. I opened my eyes a crack, but they were still there, which meant I wasn’t hallucinating. I was living in a nightmare.

Have you heard of your life flashing back before you die? Well, that happened to me, and it was terrifying. I remembered my grandmother telling me, “Imagination is never too small. You can go for infinity. There are no limits whatsoever to imagination.” All of a sudden, I knew what to do. I closed my eyes, and thought hard of a sword—A special sword that makes the monster I defeated into dust and gets it sucked by the TV to its regular game world. A solid object started to form in my hands. I opened my eyes. The sword was in my hands, glistening in the afternoon light. I noticed that I was wearing armor, too. Now it was equal.

As quick as lightening, I vaporized the toughest monster. This was the easy part. Now that the monsters knew that was coming, they attacked. I was a whirlwind of sword attacks. I parried and jabbed. About 30 minutes later, only one monster remained. The name was Darth Vader. He was the hardest to beat because of his armor. I needed a lightsaber. I thought hard. A second later, I was holding a blue lightsaber. I attacked. Vader did, too. For a few minutes we were sword fighting one on one. I was getting tired. I made another lightsaber on my left hand. This was easier to attack and defend. I struck him mercilessly. One of my jabs hit this mask and went under his mask. With a horrible screech, it evaporated.

I was so tired I could sleep for a week. But before I can, I needed to unplug the game. As soon as I did, I passed out…

いかがでしたか?

特にの付いている単語は帰国子女ならではと言いますか、なかなか日本で英語を勉強してきた生徒では使えなさそうな表現で、感心させられます。
