Creative Writing

Story starter

Sample Answer

Story starter

Carmen and her dad went fishing at the lake. Dad caught several fish, but when Carmen pulled in her hook and line she found …

… that she had caught an old, rusty, and dirty metal box. Carmen frowned in disappointment as she realized that she had not caught a fish like her dad had. She was about to throw the box back into the lake when she noticed something strange about it. There was something inside the box. Curiosity got the best of her, and she decided to open the box to see what was inside.

As she pried open the lid, she gasped at what she saw. There was a small, old journal inside the box. It was dusty and looked like it had been there for years. Carmen’s dad came over to see what had caught her attention.

”What did you find, Carmen?” he asked.

Carmen showed her dad the journal. “It’s an old journal. I wonder who it belongs to,” she said, flipping through the yellowed pages.

Her dad took a closer look at the journal. “This looks like it’s been here for a long time. Maybe we can find some clues in it and return it to its owner,” he suggested.

Excited at the possibility of solving a mystery, Carmen eagerly flipped through the pages. The journal was filled with beautiful, handwritten entries from a woman named Emily. She wrote about her life and her experiences at the lake. Carmen felt like she was reading someone’s personal diary.

As they continued to read, they discovered that Emily had lost the journal at the lake years ago. They decided to take the journal with them and try to find the owner. They asked around at the nearby stores, but no one seemed to know anyone named Emily.

Just as they were about to give up, they noticed an elderly woman walking by. She looked sad, and Carmen had a hunch that she might be the owner of the journal. They walked up to her and showed her the journal.

The woman’s eyes lit up with joy as she recognized the journal. “That’s mine! I lost it at the lake years ago,” she said.

Carmen and her dad felt a sense of accomplishment as they returned the journal to its rightful owner. The woman thanked them and told them that the journal held a lot of memories of her late husband, who had passed away many years ago. Carmen felt proud of herself for finding the journal and helping the woman find some closure. It was a fishing trip she would never forget.
